DATE OF ** ORIGINAL ** INSERT PHOTO / COVER / PRINT: 1930CITY / TOWN-STATE: ARTIST: PHOTOGRAPH BY BEKEN AND SON ENGLAND The Beken family has made history in marine photography, from father to son, through four generations. From the 1900s to the present, the Beken men have taken hundreds of photographs of racing and cruising yachts, etching their name into the history of yachting and ocean racing. Four generations of men have made the Beken family history of sea photography. The story begins in 1888 when Alfred Edward Beken (1815-1915) moved from his native Canterbury, Kent, to the Isle of Wight with his son Frank (1880-1970). There he bought a pharmacy in Birmingham Road on the seaport of Cowes. The town was already famous at the time for the organization of one of the oldest sailing races, the Cowes Week. It was watching the yachts sailing from his bedroom window that made Frank want to capture these moments. Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that the cameras of the time were not adapted to the sea conditions encountered. Franck then decided to design and build a new type of camera. Two wooden frames replace the usual canvas bellows. One contains a focusing system and a screw-type shutter, the other frame houses a viewfinder. It is the ancestor of the double lens cameras. The release is done by biting a rubber ball held between the teeth.Alfred and Franck started to photograph cruising and racing yachts under sail, a real challenge at the time, while learning to find the best angle for the shotsThe pictures were sold as souvenirs in the Beken’s pharmacy, alongside medicines and other perfumes. Within a few years, they attracted the attention of yachting enthusiasts, and even the royal family of England, who visited the pharmacy. Queen Victoria, King George V and more recently the Duke of Edinburgh awarded the company a Royal Warrant, a symbol of British excellence.hots. In the 1930s, Frank’s son, Keith (1914 — 2007), took over the Beken family’s artistic legacy. After graduating as a chemist, he became a helicopter commander in the air-sea rescue operation in Cowes during the Second World War. He started photography by taking pictures of the famous J-Class and began color photography in the 1950s. For several years, he photographed various sailing regattas from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean.Frank died in 1970. It was then decided to close the pharmacy and to create a real photography activity. Keith is in turn joined by his son, Kenneth, 4th of the name, born in 1951. The two men created the company «Beken of Cowes» to market their photographs. It was this company that made the Beken name famous in the sailing world. Keith retired in the mid 1990’s after bringing the famous sun shot of the sailing boat Silk II to life. He died in February 2007 at the age of 92.THEME: EXTRA INFO (TEXT & IMAGE): BLACK AND WHITE INSERT PHOTOGRAPHY CAN EVOKE MANY MOODS / EMOTIONS…. WHEN FRAMED FOR DECOR USE. Shamrock was a racing yacht built in 1898 that was the unsuccessful Irish challenger for the 1899 America’s Cup against the United States defender, Columbia. Design Shamrock was designed by third-generation Scottish boatbuilder, William Fife III, and built in 1898 by J. Thorneycroft & Co., at Church Wharf, Chiswick, for owner Sir Thomas Lipton of the Royal Ulster Yacht Club (and also of Lipton Tea fame). However her draft was too great for construction at Chiswick and she was built at Millwall. Shamrock (also known as Shamrock I, to distinguish her from her successors) was built in 1898 under a shroud of secrecy, and christened by Lady Russell of Killowen at its launch on 26 June 1899. Shamrock featured a composite build, with manganese-bronze bottom and aluminium topside clinkerbuilt over a steel frame and a pine decking. Career She was initially skippered by Captain Archibald Hogarth. During her trials she raced against the 1895 America’s Cup challenger, Valkyrie III, as well as twice beating the Prince of Wales yacht Britannia in regattas on the Solent. She sailed to New York for the America’s Cup race in the summer of 1899. The Cup defender Columbia beat Shamrock in all three races. She returned to Britain in the autumn of 1899, towed by Lipton’s steam yacht, Erin. She was subsequently refitted to serve as a trial horse for Shamrock II and Shamrock III. Sir Thomas Johnstone Lipton, 1st Baronet KCVO (10 May 1848 – 2 October 1931) was a Scotsman of Ulster-Scots parentage who was a self-made man, as company founder of Lipton Tea, merchant, philanthropist and yachtsman who lost 5 straight America’s Cup matches. He engaged in extensive advertising for his chain of grocery stores and his brand of Lipton teas. He boasted that his secret for success was selling the best goods at the cheapest prices, harnessing the power of advertising, and always being optimistic.[1] He was the most persistent challenger in the history of the America’s Cup yacht race.[2] Parentage and childhood Lipton was born in a tenement in Crown Street in the Gorbals, Glasgow, on 10 May 1848. His Ulster-Scots parents, Thomas Lipton senior and Frances Lipton (née Johnstone), were from the townland of either Shannock Green or Shankillk (Tonitybog), both near Roslea, in the south-east corner of County Fermanagh in Ulster, not far from Clones in County Monaghan. His parents were married in St. Mark’s Church of Ireland Church in Aghadrumsee, near Roslea. The Liptons had been smallholders in County Fermanagh for generations but, by the late 1840s, Thomas Lipton’s parents had been forced to leave Ireland due to the Great Famine of 1845. Moving to Scotland in search of a better living for their young family, the Liptons had settled in Glasgow by 1847. Lipton’s father had a number of occupations throughout the 1840s and 1850s, including working as a labourer and as a printer. Although Lipton later stated that he was born at his family’s home in Crown Street in the Gorbals in 1850, there is no record of this in the parish register for that period. In the 1851 census, however, the family were recorded as living in the north of Glasgow, with young Thomas being listed as being 3 years old, suggesting that he must have been born in 1848. Thomas’ siblings, three brothers and one sister, all died in infancy, but Thomas, the youngest, survived. «Tommy» Lipton was educated at St Andrew’s Parish School close to Glasgow Green between 1853 and 1863. By the early 1860s his parents owned a shop at 11 Crown Street in the Gorbals where they sold ham, butter and eggs. Thomas Lipton left school at the age of thirteen to supplement his parents’ limited income, and found employment as a printer’s errand boy, and later as a shirtcutter. He also enrolled at a night school, the Gorbals Youth’s School, during this period. Sportsman King Edward VII and King George V both shared their interest in yachting with Lipton and enjoyed his company. Between 1899 and 1930 he challenged the American holders of the America’s Cup through the Royal Ulster Yacht Club five times with his yachts called Shamrock through Shamrock V. His well-publicised efforts to win the cup, which earned him a specially designed cup for «the best of all losers», made his tea famous in the United States. Lipton, a self-made man, was no natural member of the British upper class and the elite Royal Yacht Squadron only admitted him shortly before his death. Lipton was inducted into the America’s Cup Hall of Fame in 1993. Before the first Football World Cup was held in 1930, Thomas Lipton donated the Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy and The Lipton Challenge Cup in Italy. In 1914 he presented the silver Sir Thomas Lipton Cup to his friend Con Riley of Winnipeg as a means of promoting the sport of rowing in the central portions of Canada and the United States. Since then the rowing clubs of the North West International Rowing Association (NWIRA) have fiercely battled each year for the honour of having their names engraved upon the Lipton Cup. He also donated the Copa Lipton trophy which was contested between the national football teams of Argentina and Uruguay from 1905 to 1992. **NOTE** : PAGES MAY SHOW AGE WEAR AND IMPERFECTIONS TO MARGINS, WITH CLOSED NICKS AND CUTS, WHICH DO NOT AFFECT AD IMAGE OR TEXT WHEN MATTED AND FRAMED.
