Provenance: This rare occult work was owned by world-renowned occultist fashion designer Alexander McQueen. McQueen’s book label appears inside the front cover: «From the Library of ALEXANDER McQUEEN.» For more information about Mr. McQueen and how the occult inspired his world-famous fashions, please see main description. ALEXANDER McQUEEN and THE OCCULT Lee Alexander McQueen (1969 – 2010) was a British fashion designer and couturier. He attended Central Saint Martins in London and apprenticed on Savile Row prior to founding his own “Alexander McQueen” label in 1992. He was chief designer at Givenchy from 1996 to 2001. His achievements in fashion earned him four British Designer of the Year awards (1996, 1997, 2001 and 2003), as well as the CFDA’s International Designer of the Year award in 2003. McQueen died by suicide in 2010 at the age of 40, at his home in Mayfair, London, shortly after the death of his mother. Paganism and the occult were recurring themes in the collections of Alexander McQueen. His mother had traced their family tree back to Elizabeth Howe, one of the victims executed in the Salem witch trials of 1692. Upon learning of the family connection, McQueen and his creative director Sarah Burton personally visited Salem, Massachusetts in search of more information about his ancestor. The experience proved intensely personal for McQueen and resulted in his Autumn–Winter 2007 ready-to-wear collection, “In memory of Elizabeth Howe, Salem, 1692.” For part of his 2007 show, McQueen traced a blood red pentagram inside a black sand circle on the floor of the catwalk, upon which models walked, donning moulded leather corset dresses with nipped-in waists and sporting bold blue eye makeup. A velvet and satin dress from McQueen’s 2007 Elizabeth Howe collection was exhibited at the Peabody Museum in Salem (where you can also see the “witch nails” regurgitated by the witchcraft accusers in 1692). Inspired by pagan symbolism, McQueen designed a starburst in hand-sewn, iridescent gunmetal-gray bugle beads radiating down the neckline and across the chest and shoulders of this form-fitting velvet dress. “It was a very personal collection for Lee” Ms. Burton later wrote, “but then Lee always used to say that his work was autobiographical. One year after McQueen’s untimely death, his work was celebrated in a posthumous exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2011. Entitled, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” it remains one of the best-attended exhibitions in the Met’s history. Also, in 2015, The Live Archives gallery in Hackney, London, England, announced ‘The Circle,’ a new exhibition of alternative, occult glamour from the dark and supernaturally compelling houses of Alexander McQueen and others.
