Item for sale: A fully restored Carl Zeiss Standard Lab 06 microscope with phase contrast. It has the following: Durable stand: textured gray enamel finish, wear resistant, chemical resistant, round base (KF2 type), sturdy vertical arm, coaxial focusing assembly, paired (left and right) coarse focus knobs, paired (left and right) fine focus knobs, and easy, smooth action; Four-place nosepiece with Zeiss objectives: low-power 3.2x/0.07 160/-, low-power 10x/0.22 160/0.17 high-power (dry) Ph2 40x/0.65 160/0.17, high-power Ph2 100x/1.25 oil 160/-; Zeiss binocular head with: 1.25x head magnification factor, 45 inclined eyepiece tubes, interpupillary distance scale, Siedentopf design (using mirrors), 360 circular dovetail attachment, spring-loaded retainer thumb screw, and components in very good condition. A pair of Zeiss eyepieces with: highest-resolution (Kpl) correction, 10x magnification, no cloudiness of the lens cement, no separation of the lens cement, no visible scratches on the exit pupil, and no indication of fungal growth; Zeiss stage with: functional specimen clip, coaxial mechanical stage controls, low-positioned controls, controls located on the right, mechanical stage moves well; Zeiss substage condenser with: pre-centered top lens element, 3-position rotating lower element carrier, 1. low power (3.2x, 10x) — bright field, 2. high power (40x 100x) — bright field, 3. high power (40x- 100x) — phase contrast, centerable phase ring (Ph2), pre-centered condenser aperture iris, condenser focusing lever, and components in good condition; In-base illumination system with: power supply and cord, halogen light source, centerable (sliding) collector assembly, adjustable field iris diaphragm, rheostat to adjust brightness, everything in good working order. This microscope has had all of its missing components replaced with compatible parts, it has been thoroughly cleaned, and its lubrication has been refreshed as needed. It is complete and has been thoroughly tested. It is now be guaranteed to be ready for immediate use. It is highly suitable for a wide variety of laboratory, classroom, research, or just fun types of applications. The Zeiss Standard Lab-06 is designed to be both durable enough for a classroom and easy to use, but it is nevertheless a highly capable instrument. The objectives are high-quality achromats, and the Kpl correction (compensating, flat field) gives the highest level of resolution for the eyepieces. Many examples with the KF2-style base were made without some substage components. On the other hand, this particular Lab-06 microscope has a focusable condenser, centerable light, condenser iris diaphragm, and field diaphragm, features that are characteristic of more expensive models of the renowned Zeiss line. Thus, it is fully equipped for Koehler illumination, which allows for the highest possible resolution to be achieved. Thus, it is ready to use for high resolution bright-field microscopy. It is additionally fully equipped for proper phase contrast using either the 40x objective or the 100x oil immersion objective. This capability makes it possible to investigate unstained specimens, specifically including living microorganisms and unstained tissue samples. To establish precise measurements requires a stage micrometer or an ocular micrometer calibrated using a stage micrometer. This particular microscope is outfitted with a binocular head, but the mount for it will also accommodate Zeiss trinocular and monocular heads with no modification required. To change the interpupillary distance, clasp the mirror housings and rotate them around the central pivot. The tube length will not change as the you do so, and the scale at the center of the head will indicate the changing interpupillary distance. Expect the head to be detached for shipment. To reattach it loosen the retainer thumb screw, push the dovetail mount against the spring-loaded pin, lower the dovetail past the other two pins, and retighten the thumb screw. The head can be oriented horizontally anywhere within a 360 circle. To reposition the head, loosen the retaining thumb screw slightly, turn the head, and re-tighten the thumb screw. The substage condenser is integrated with the stage and has a top element that is pre-centered and fixed at the proper height. The lower part of the condenser rotates into three positions, one for low power objectives, one for high power objectives, and one for phase contrast. To switch between the three condenser positions, pull down on the rotating lower part (it’s spring loaded) just enough to release it from its notch, rotate it gently until it clicks into place in the next notch, and let the spring return it to the «up» position. While it stays in the «up» position, rotation will cause the condenser iris to open and close. Sometimes a slight upward pressure will help to operate the iris without accidentally changing the condenser lens position. The image of the field diaphragm can be focused by adjusting a lever just below the stage. The field diaphragm is located in the base, and can be centered by sliding the combined diaphragm/light collector assembly around until the image of the diaphragm is located precisely where it belongs. The collector assembly includes a halogen bulb to provide light. Halogen bulbs yield more light than tungsten incandescent lamps, but can be dimmed smoothly using the rheostatic control in a similar fashion. While the light is not as yellow as that from typical tungsten incandescent bulbs, a modest color correction is still needed to yield truly white light. This can be obtained by using a blue filter. The photomicrographs, all taken with this microscope, serve to illustrate some of its capabilities. They are as follows: Cinnamon fern, cross section — 3.2x objective, bright field; Cinnamon fern, cross section — 10x objective, bright field; Onion root tip — 10x objective, bright field; Onion root tip — 40x objective, bright field (with Koehler illumination); Onion root tip with dividing cells — 40x objective, bright field (with Koehler illumination); Onion root tip with a dividing cell in metaphase — 100x oil immersion objective, bright field (with Koehler illumination); Onion root tip with dividing cell in metaphase, spindle visible — 100x oil immersion objective, phase contrast; Staminate pine cone — 3.2x objective, bright field; Staminate pine cone — 10x objective, bright field; Staminate pine cone, pollen grains — 40x objective, bright field (with Koehler illumination); Staminate pine cone, ornamentation on the surface of a pollen grain — 100x oil immersion objective, bright field (with Koehler illumination); Staminate pine cone, ornamentation on the surface of a pollen grain — 100x oil immersion objective, phase contrast. Cosmetically, this microscope is in very good condition with a minimal number of scratches, dings, and magic marker. There is, however, a small piece of the base next to the power cord that was been broken out and glued back together. While the repair could have been neater, it is continuing to hold. There is a number written with magic marker in the same area. The finish of the 10x objective has lost some of its original paint in the colored stripe. The numbers are, however, engraved on the barrel, and therefore are completely intact. The mount for the center trim plate on the head that has the manufacturer’s name and interpupillary graduations has been repaired. Nevertheless, it should still serve satisfactorily to keep dust out of the head and the damage does not show. To evaluate the cosmetic condition fully, please take a careful look at the photographs. The Zeiss Standard Lab-06 is truly a classic model of top-quality microscope. It is a great instrument for anyone, young or old, who is serious about microscopy. Is anyone homeschooling?
