Two books by Herbert Hoover, both first editions published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 8vo: (1) Addresses Upon the American Road, 1933-1938. Published 1938. viii, 390pp. Very good book in very good dust jacket. Dark navy cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and graphics on front panel and spine. Boards are clean but lightly scuffed. Small amount of loss to lettering on spine. Crimping along edges and corners at head and tail of board spine. External page edges are age-toned, lightly soiled and with a bit of foxing. Shadow transfers on end-papers. Text pages are age-toned else internally clean and with snug text block. Dust jacket is stuffed overall and lightly soiled. Light sunning on spine and folds. Folds are creased and scuffed but not rubbed through. Edges and corners at head and tail of jacket spine are chipped and rubbed and with several closed vertical tears of 3/8″ or less. Fore-edge corners are rubbed, lower front fore-edge corner has loss of approx. 1/8″. Inside flaps are blank and not clipped. (2) Further Addresses Upon the American Road, 1938-1940. Published 1940. vii, (2), 3-265pp. Very good minus book in very good minus dust jacket. Same dark navy cloth covered boards with gilt lettering and graphics on front panel and spine. Board panels are lightly scuffed, spine is sunned. Outermost edges at head and tail of board spine are split. External page edges, shadow transfers and text pages are all more age-darkened than in the first volume. No marks or tears and text block is snug. Dust jacket has stains on the front, back and spine. Loss across width at head of spine and adjacent upper edges of front and back panels and with adjacent closed vertical tears along the spine folds. Lower edge at tail of jacket spine is rubbed and back corner has a series of closed and adjacent vertical and horizontal tears of up to 1 1/8″. Lower right front fore-edge corner has a 7/8″ closed vertical tear along the fore-edge fold. Upper edges of front and back panels have a number of chips and closed tears; lower edge of front panel has a number of tiny rubs. The lower edges of front and back panels each have a 1/2″ closed vertical tear to the left of center. Upper right fore-edge corner of back jacket panel has a 3/4″ closed vertical tear along the back fore-edge fold. All fore-edge corners have loss from rubs. There are several old tape repairs on the reverse side of dust jacket. Not price clipped. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions.
