Titled Chinese Pheasants, originally created in 1891, and is taken from Keinen Kacho Gafu, a four volume series of lavish bird and floral studies. The album contains 160 different bird illustrations and was published by Nihimura Soemon in Kyoto. The series is considered to be one of Keinen’s most significant contributions to Japanese art. The image itself measures 7.5x 9.75 inches. Stamped text in upper right and lower left margins. Artist’s seal in lower left corner. Comes with a vintage House of Heydenryk of New York City frame, which has hand carved gold organic patterns and sleek white bar segments. Possibly from the Art Deco era, but could be earlier. Measures 13x 15.5 inches, wired and ready to hang. Frame maker label can be found on back. Appears to be in overall good condition considering age. Print has age related toning but colors still look bright. Paper has some handling creases, small stain upper right, and a small tear on the upper left corner. The print is framed behind glass and has not been removed for further inspection. Frame has some wear consistent with age. This is a beautiful meiji era color woodblock print with a highly unique, hand carved frame, and will make a fine addition to any art collection. About Imao Keinen: Imao Keinen (今尾 景年, Kyoto 1845 – 1924) was a Japanese painter and print designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, part of the shin-hanga («new prints») movement. In 1904 he was appointed as an Imperial Household Artist. He received a comprehensive education in various Japanese art styles from the age of 12. In 1880 he received a professorship at the Kyoto School of Painting. Following the publication of the Keinen Kachō Gafu album in 1892, he became a member of the Art Committee of the imperial court and in 1919 a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. The Keinen Kachō Gafu (景年花鳥畫譜), published in 1892, is an album with an extensive series of bird-and-flower (kachō-e) in woodblock print. His works are part of many museum collections throughout the world. The Four Seasons Bird and Flower Albums (Keinen Kacho Gafu) Keinen’s most famous work, Keinen Kacho Gafu, is a stunning four-part work of woodblock prints of birds and flowers in the four seasons. Published in 1891, these woodblocks are full oban vertical subjects in a natural soft color palette. Featuring stunning large birds and beautiful small songbirds against scenery like blossoming cherry branches or snow-covered trees, these are exceptional nature prints from the late 19th century. The birds are naturalistically presented in their native habitat, featuring beautiful Japanese plants and flowers. The series was published by Nishimura Soemon in four volumes of forty prints each, with the blocks carved by Tanaka Hirokichi and printed by Miki Jinzaburo. About House of Heydenryk Frames: The House of Heydenryk (pronounced HI-den-rike) was founded in 1845 in Amsterdam. The firm employed the finest gilders and carvers in Holland to restore antiques and produce picture frames in styles dating from the 15th through the 18th centuries. Heydenryk also amassed one of the most extensive antique frame collections in the country and provided period pieces to art dealers, artists and collectors in the Netherlands. By the mid-20th century, the House of Heydenryk was regarded as one of the world’s most prestigious picture frame companies. Its clientele included the greatest museums in Europe, from the Tate and National Gallery in London to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Heydenryk worked with Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza and members of the Rothschild family, framing some of the most important private art collections in history. In addition to restoring such 17th-century masterpieces as Rembrandt’s The Night Watch, the firm chose and produced frames for many major Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings of the 19th and 20th centuries. Legend has it that a struggling young artist named Vincent van Gogh came into the showroom offering his drawings in exchange for a Heydenryk frame. Over 100 years later, the House of Heydenryk would supervise and provide all of the framing for the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. As its success grew, the House of Heydenryk opened offices in London, The Hague and Brussels. Now established as one of Europe’s premier picture framers, the company looked to the United States as the next logical step for its expansion. Henry Heydenryk, Jr., representing the fourth generation of the family-run business, was the obvious choice to bring the firm’s services to America. Although young Henry had worked in the Amsterdam shop learning carving, gilding and frame history, his first work experience after graduation was as a punch-card machines sales manager for Remington Rand. He was multi-talented and was able to speak and write in six languages. His assignments took him to Europe, Canada and the United States, where he eventually settled in upstate New York. Finally, in 1936, Henry Heydenryk, Jr., agreed to start a Heydenryk branch in Manhattan, but he would do so on his own terms. In the beginning, Mr. Heydenryk imported frames from Holland and France, and sold them to the New York fine arts community. His vast knowledge of picture frames and their history proved invaluable as museums, collectors and galleries sought out his expertise.
