eBay Hello: For sale is a John Packer Plastic English Horn. Please read this description carefully because it contains important information about the correct Bocals to use with this instrument. I purchased this instrument for my daughter in 2019 because there were English Horn parts to be played in the High School orchestra and she wanted to play them rather than the Basson playing them. I agreed but I wanted to buy a lower priced instrument since I figured it would go unused after college. Surprisingly, she was very good at the English horn and I relented to buying her a new Howarth wooden horn and I loaned the plastic one to my sister who sometimes plays it in the community orchestra. I now loan her the Howarth when she needs it. There are a very few plastic English horns on the market and they are generally considered to have inferior tonality to the good wooden ones, which cost a fortune and can crack. Although this is a Chinese made instrument the keywork is pretty good. Now a word about Bocals: Most of the better horns do not come with any specific bocal. This is because the choice of bocal is dependent on the musician and the instrument. There is also variation in the insertion bore of the different brands of instrument as these are not standardized. In other words, the buyer of this instrument will need to use a try-and-buy program or find a music store locally with a selection of bocals. The bocals which come with this instrument are not suitable and they won’t work very well. It does work very well with a Loree or Fox Bocal and several models and sizes should be tried to achieve optimum pitch and note clarity. I have enclosed the original bocals for cork size reference because this horn has a slightly larger insertion bore size than a Fox instrument. If you do not have a Bocal already please use the Try and Buy services of Midwest Musical Imports (www.mmimports.com) or Charles Music (Charlesmusic.com) or Hanna’s Oboes (The oboe Fairy) or Forrest’s Music (Forrestsmusic.com) or Bocal Majority Woodwinds (bocalmajoritystore.com). You may wish to send them one of the bocals for cork size reference. You can also use plumber’s teflon tape to wrap around a cork which is too small just to test that Bocal and then have it re-corked. I must be frank that the correct bocal will make all of the difference and that with the correct bocal this will be a very good choice for a beginner’s English horn. I have reduced the price from new so there will be room in your budget for a proper bocal, which will probably be expensive ($ 200-500). Thank you for reading this.
