eBay USED NIKONOS II Underwater Camera Serial #1048407 with Nikon 35mm 1:1.25 lens , Serial #433470, lens shield and front 63mm lens cap This camera became my emergency backup underwater camera and my best friend. On a shoot in Tahiti, I failed to seat one of the O rings on my Nikonos V camera properly and it flooded. Even though I immediately cleaned the internals with distilled water and dried out the circuits and boards, the camera was history. Electronic cameras do not do well when flooded. I shipped it back to Nikon and the repair was more expensive than purchasing a new camera, which I had to do in order to finish the shoot. When I returned to the USA, I purchased this camera from a fellow pro. It has no printed circuit boards and can be flooded, flushed dried and it will still keep on working (fortunately I never had to actually do this). Even though I continued to used more sophisticated cameras (with expensive custom enclosures) this camera could always be counted on to work and because the Nikon 35mm 1:2.5 (SN 433470) lens is calibrated to work both underwater and on land, I could come out of the water and continue to shoot on land without having to change out the lens and visa versa. If you hold the camera with the lens half underwater and half above water, you can get shots that keep both the underwater image and above water image both in focus. Even though it is not the most sophisticated setup, I carried it with me all the time as I could shoot on land and then jump into the water and keep shooting. I ended up buying all sorts of extra things for this camera including lenses, close-up adapters and even a completed underwater flash outfit with flashbulbs. Yes, flash bulbs give film a different look. It is in great shape and well-maintained. I just ran a roll of film through it and all of the gears and shutters are working and smooth. There is a manual in .pdf format. Brief Specification information. Waterproof to 50 meters (call it 160 ft), immensely strong; can be fitted with interchangeable lenses; there is nothing quite like it. In 1963 the original Nikonos, appeared with a 35mm f/2.5 Nikkor-W lens. Top speed is 1/500 sec for better reliability and quietness, and the shutter speed dial is on the top of the camera, about where you would expect it. This Nikonos is similar to the original, but with some modifications to the rewind that make it easier to use with dive gloves. Shutter & Winder In One The first thing that you notice is that there is no wind-on, or apparent shutter release. Actually, they are combined. A big, spring-loaded lever on the front of the camera falls under the right index finger. One pressure, pushing the lever from the stand-off position toward the camera against a spring, winds the film on. It then clicks into place level with the front of the camera. Unless you have the shutter release lock in place (a simple swiveling tab that blocks further movement) a second pressure releases the shutter, and the lever springs out again. It’s easy to use with diving gloves on. Just as original as the wind-on/shutter release are the lens controls, which consist of two rotating knobs sticking out of the side of the lens. One sets focus, with a circular scale that whizzes around behind the front window. The other sets aperture (to f/22), again on a rotating scale behind the window, but it also operates a couple of «pincers» on the focusing scale that move in and out to indicate depth of field, Hasselblad-style. To make life more interesting, you can install the lens upside down if you like, so that when you tip it toward you on the neck strap, the lens scales are the right way up. Water proof sealing The camera opens by first removing the bayonet-mount lens. Twist it, pull it out, against some resistance (there’s a greased O-ring to form a watertight seal), and you’re ready for the next stage. The double-jointed strap lugs act as little crowbars to lever the innards of the body out of the outer shell. Hook the short ends under the locating lugs on the camera top, and push down on the long ends. The works then come out, complete with the viewfinder, and you can load the film (reasonably) conventionally. Reverse these procedures to close it all up. Again, an O-ring seals everything together. This simple self contained enclosure does not warp or bind up when subjected to pressure. Available Lenses Lenses other than the 35mm f/2.5 for the Nikonos were corrected only for use underwater. The included 35mm f/2.5 can be used above water as well. Only the 35mm in-camera viewfinder frame is built into the camera. W-Nikkor 35mm f/2.5 Standard lens, works in air and underwater. Coverage: 62° in air, 46°30’ in water. Resolution: 62 lines/mm, centre, at f/8. Min focus: 0.8m. Min aperture f/22. Filter thread 58mm. Normally used with extension tube or supplementary lens.
