Technics SL-BD22 FG Servo Automatic Turntable in its original box, new belt & strobe lights, serviced. It has an Audio Technica AT92E cartridge with a good stylus and comes with the power and RCA cables, as well as the 45 adapter. The dust cover has some light scratches, normal for this era of turntables. Vinyl Engine reviews:10/10 by Marantzy»I have to give the SLBD22 10/10, because it is what it is; a ‘mid-price’ (in 2002 when I bought it for £100) deck with an FG Servo speed stabilizer, a low mass tone-arm with a P-34 (AT) T-Mount cartridge, and an auto-return switch off. It’s now 2017, and the thing still runs like new. Tonally, it has a very solid bass, sounds a little ‘polite’ but with good dynamics, and just gets on with the job of playing vinyl without the need for screw-drivers and tracking gauges. There are still a lot of P-Mount carts and stylii around for the deck, and the rock-solid speed stability and the red strobe are appealing. Construction is an injection molded plinth in graphite grey, with a heavier base molded from some sort of composite material. The design is very slim and still modern looking twenty or more years after its introduction. Rather than use the over-engineering approach to speed stability of heavy platters and massive bearings, the SLBD22 has light-weight alloy platter, coupled to a DC motor with a belt drive. The motor supplies a tachometer feed to the FG Servo electronics which locks the speed. There’s a pitch adjustment on the front panel, a throwback to radio broadcast days when pitch compensation could be used to (in theory) to match playback to live performers. Clearly, with FG Servo, pitch adjustment would rarely be needed otherwise. Once set to the strobe, speed stability is remarkable. As Technics say, the strobe light works at the AC mains frequency, so any visual speed creep is ‘down to the mains frequency shifting.’ As a no-fuss player the SLBD22 works well, with excellent sound quality at its original price. However, the Technics brand is now sought after, and prices are triple the original in some places. Wow and flutter and rumble are inaudible, which seems to help with the ‘quiet’ presentation and amiable dynamics. The low mass arm tracks at a preset 1.2 grams, light by any standard. Pleasing to use and look at, SLBD22 deserves more recognition as a tuneful and fuss-free way of accessing your vinyl.
